Volunteer, Camp, Fish: WYTU's La Barge Creek Rendezvous
Imagine spending a weekend under the vast Wyoming sky, connecting with fellow outdoor enthusiasts, casting a line into pristine waters, and knowing you're making a tangible difference for native trout. You can do just that!
Wyoming Trout Unlimited (WYTU) invites you to our annual La Barge Creek Rendezvous, happening July 11-13! This is a unique opportunity to blend family fun, camping, fishing, and vital hands-on conservation work in a truly special place.
Why La Barge Creek?
Located in beautiful western Wyoming, La Barge Creek is more than just a scenic stream – it's a crucial tributary to the Green River and a vital sanctuary for native Yellowstone Cutthroat Trout, one of our state's prized natural gems. Protecting and restoring this habitat is essential. We're thrilled to be working with Trout Unlimited Project Manager Nick Walrath to lead these efforts.
According to Walrath, tackling this project is critical: “The success of the La Barge Creek project is important, Colorado River Cutthroat exists in a shadow of their historic range. This restoration project will secure an important metapopulation that will help the species survive into the future.”
Roll Up Your Sleeves: Be Part of the Solution
This year's Rendezvous marks the exciting first phase of restoration work. Volunteers will get their hands dirty (literally!) helping with crucial tasks like conducting surveys and rebuilding sections of riparian fencing. This initial groundwork is essential, setting the stage for future phases focused on repairing stream banks and improving in-stream habitat for trout.
Nick Walrath emphasizes the importance of this early volunteer involvement in saying,”Your efforts this weekend will directly contribute to improving this fishery for years to come!”
It's Not Just Work: Campfires, Fishing & Scenery!
While conservation is our focus, a WYTU Rendezvous is also about community and enjoying the very resources we're working to protect. The weekend wouldn't be complete without:
Camping: Spend Friday and Saturday nights camping near the creek.
Community: Gather around the campfire, share stories, and connect with fellow WYTU members and conservationists.
Fishing: When you're not volunteering, ample opportunities exist to cast a line! The waters around La Barge Creek hold wild rainbow trout, brown trout, and of course, Wyoming's native cutthroat.
Scenery: Remember to look up from your dry fly! The majestic Wyoming landscape surrounding La Barge Creek is worth soaking in.
Join Us for a Weekend of Impact and Fun!
WYTU would love for you and your family to be part of this rewarding experience from July 11-13. Come for the camping, the fishing, the camaraderie, and the satisfaction of contributing directly to the health of one of Wyoming's vital wild streams.
